Rebuilding GSWR Drummond Corridor Third No 731 - Chapter 13

Spring 2024

731 arrives in the RCB

In March, 731 was moved from the Museum into the Carriage Shop, otherwise known as the RCB. This had two purposes; firstly to allow access to tools and equiment which otherwise would have entailed a long trek from Museum to RCB and secondly to allow additional help to be given by the C&W team. This has proven to be absolutely invaluable.

Repaired end framing in place

A mammoth session of work brought over the parts, tools and materials which were stored in the Museum workshop area. These were then stored next to the carriage's new location. With a lot of help from Don Clarke and the other experts the east end cill, which had been marked out, was machined and the mortices were cut. The cill was then glued and bolted into position on the vehicle. This is a critical move as it means that the framework of 731 is now complete. The next moves are replacing the damaged flooring under the toilet and across the vestibule and the re-panelling the end of the coach. Huge thanks to everyone who helped with this job.
