Rebuilding GSWR Drummond Corridor Third No 731 - Chapter 12

Winter 2022/23

Compartment side primed

Work on 731 has been paused due to serious illness in the restoration team. Prior to this occurring, the whole of the compartment side has been primed in aluminium primer and the long process of filling and sanding the beading has commenced.

No. 2 end repair Barassie repair filled

Work has also started at No 2 end - the end furthest from the dynamo. After taking advice from the GSWR Association, it was decided that a Barassie matchboard repair at this end would be filled in. It rather detracts from the Edwardian elegance of the vehicle, and this technique detracts from its original appearance. The material is retained for reference purposes beneath the filling. This repair technique is unique to Barassie Works and, it has to be said, results in inferior material being used. Barassie repair sections are also available for study and reference on the Manson Brake, No 122, fully restored in the Museum.

It is very much hoped that normal work will resume in the summer, but before that, 731 will be moved in the Museum to allow better access.

Please donate to the 731 fund if you can. Thanks!
