Rebuilding GSWR Drummond Corridor Third No 731 - Chapter 15

Winter 2024/5

Compartment 1 centre view

Work has been concentrated on the amazing surviving interior in recent weeks. Compartment 1 has been c leaned down and the loose paint removed from the ceiling. This was then primed, sealed and undercoated, revealing the Alhambrine panelling in all its glory. 731 may retain the only surviving examples of this material - made in Barrhead by Thomas Thomson - still extant in its original position.

The upholstery was brushed down and then vacuumed clean. It will be further cleaned when other work is complete. All the original finishes in the compartment and in the corridor outside, as well as the vestibule at No 1 end have been polished with Danish Oil and the result is quite satisfactory. Interior work will continue until the warmer weather appears. If it appears.
