Rebuilding Gresley TK 1002 - Chapter 27

Winter 2021/2022

1002 out in the yard

In early January the TK was dragged out into the yard coupled to NB saloon 461 in order to test the steam heating plumbing. This went surprisingly well with only 2 serious leaks at the large flanges - this was pretty much expected. There were a couple of other minor leaks in compartments 1 and 8 which would require remedial work.
In the foreground of the photo above, the east end gangway outer plate can be seen. With the TK out of the RCB, the opportunity was taken to wheel the gangway on its trolley into the shed for clening and painting.
The above photo was taken with a phone camera and there appears to be quite a bit of spherical abberation - the body of the carriage really doesn't lean over like this at the east end!

Some compartments have both seats in place

Because some heater work remained to be done, seats were only installed in compartments 2-7 to allow better access to the plumbing. Next job - fit the armrests!

East toilet WHB support trial fitted

The east end toilet was just a bare area when the SRPS took over the carriage. The business of fitting it out to be the same as the (existing) west toilet continued. Above you can see the new WHB support stand trial fitted as well as the new mouldings along the top of the matchboard (at the LHS).

Fitting ceiling edging at the west end

Having had the end ceilings down for gangway casting work, the process of refitting continued. Various pieces had been broken or damaged during dismantling so new pieces were required.

Please don't forget the Gresley TK appeal - every penny counts!
